John F. Kennedy High School in Silver Spring, opened in 1964 and was last renovated in 1999. It is 1 of 5 high schools in Montgomery County that make up the Downcounty Consortium, with the others being Northwood High School, Montgomery Blair, Wheaton, and Einstein High Schools.
As part of the DCC, students in grade 8 choose a high school they would like to attend that contains a Grades 10-12 academy program in which they are interested. After admission to a high school, students will identify an academy program within the school that they are interested in attending in Grades 10-12. Some academies do begin in Grade 9.
Each DCC high school offers distinctive academy programs designed to capture students’ interest, incorporate rigorous academic course work, explore possible career pathways, and bring real world relevance to students’ education. Kennedy’s academies include Broadcast Journalism, Business Management, Creative Multi-Media, International Baccalaureate, Leadership Training Institute (LTI – Signature Program) Medical Careers, Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC), Physical Therapy, Public Communications.
