If you are thinking about moving to Montgomery County and are interested in the arts scene, Montgomery County and the surrounding area has more than it’s fair share of offerings. The many venues are state of the art, vibrant and full of variety for all tastes and ages. Here is a brief run-down of what our county has in the way of performing arts and theatre:

Germantown’s Blackrock Center for the Arts

Blackrock Center is one of the local venues that is dedicated to serving the community through performances, exhibitions, classes and children’s camps. They offer several sized theatres, an outdoor stage, studios, classrooms and an art gallery. The acts range from jazz to classical to dance to country and so on; plus a coffeehouse series and a free summer concert series are available. Summer camps for kids offer opportunities like making jewelry or participating in dance or acting.

The Strathmore in Bethesda

On an 11-acre site outside the Beltway in Bethesda, the new Strathmore Center offers world class performances for all audiences in a variety of arts and activities. There are art exhibits, educational programs, and lectures offered in their education center. Art workshops, music and singing classes are also available. Home to the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra among other prestigious groups, there is something going on every day at Strathmore. Whether you visit the Mansion or the Music Center at Strathmore, the outdoor concert pavilion or outdoor sculpture garden, you are sure to find a multitude of activities for artistic enrichment!

Olney Theatre

Olney Theatre is 1 of 2 state theatres in Maryland offering professional productions year round. The 440-seat main stage is augmented by an outdoor raised stage and the historic stage that has been in use since 1936. The award winning regional theatre is emphasizing 20th century American classics. Family entertainment series and subscriptions are offered, as well as workshops, classes and other programs, and the free summer Shakespeare festival is unique in Montgomery County.

Round House Theater in Bethesda and Silver Spring

The Bethesda location is home to a 400-seat theatre, while Silver Spring has a 150-seat black box theatre. Together, they produce 200 theatrical performances each season. The Silver Spring location is also an educational center, boasting strong artistic programs, such as dance, children’s theatre and other programs.

Gaithersburg Arts Barn in Kentlands

The Arts Barn is a visual and performing arts center with a 99-seat theatre. Lectures and workshops are held for both adults and children, and there is a gallery for rotating exhibits. The City Art Shop holds a selection of items for purchase by local and regional artists. Spring classes and summer camps are also offered.

Performing Arts Center at Montgomery College – Rockville & Takoma Park

The Robert E. Parilla Performing Art Center is located on the Rockville campus and has just over 500 seats. They host a professional guest artist series, a children’s series and college performance art series. The Takoma Park campus, in Silver Spring, also has a performing arts center for dance, music and theatre.

Imagination Stage in Bethesda

Dedicated to making the arts accessible to all children, regardless of any challenges they may have, Imagination Stage offers after school programs and summer camps for ages 1 – 18. The also have year round professional shows that are not to be missed!

Adventure Theatre at the historic Glen Echo Park

The newly renovated Adventure Theatre is an intimate and interactive environment, with the longest running theatre program for children and families. They offer quality and creative theatre, education programs, after school and weekend classes, summer musical theatre, birthday parties and more!

Other Arts Options Close to Montgomery County

One of the benefits of living in Montgomery County is easy access to a variety of local arts venues putting on world class productions, e.g. the Kennedy Center and National Theater in DC, Wolf Trap in Virginia and Baltimore’s Hippodrome Theater. There is also a variety of experimental and small venue theater, as well as the renowned Shakespeare Theater Company and Ford’s Theater, both in DC.
